Palm Trees in the Freezing Cold

palm_trees.jpg When you think of the desert you think of cactus. When you think of a tropical oasis of billion dollar casinos built in the middle of the desert, you think of palm trees. Well okay…you probably think of gambling, but just bear with me here.

This winter season has brought very cold temperatures and even snow a couple days. We’ve hit the freezing point several times, and the palm trees are suffering, especially the locals favorite, the Mexican fan palm. The Mirage, Bellagio, Red Rock Resort, and Green Valley Ranch, are all reporting some type of damage to their trees this winter season.

One of the top nurseries in town, Star Nursery has received calls from thousands of home owners across the valley worried about their palm trees. Expert horticulturist are urging Las Vegas residence to not prune those dead leaves off just yet. We’re still expected to get freezing temperatures and those dead leaves actually will insulate the rest of the plant.

I’ve got 5 Mexican palm trees in my back yard and they are looking really weathered. I’m taking the horticulturist’s advice and leaving them alone until the weather perks up and we’re back to our normal triple digit temperatures.
